Penelope: Terror in the Harbour
Set on the day of the Halifax Explosion in 1917, Penelope: Terror In The Harbour helps students learn about the realities of life during World War I and introduces them to the events of the tragic Halifax Explosion.
Have a class discussion about Penelope's bravery after the explosion and what it means to be courageous. Engage students by sharing historical background on the impact of the Halifax Explosion on families and the shape of the city, as well as the importance of Halifax to WWI military strategy. Ask students to write a personal reflection about a time when they or someone close to them had to be brave.
Visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic website section on The Halifax Explosion for a detailed historical profile of the harbour disaster as well as pictures of the event.
