Our Canadian Girl Series Activities

The Our Canadian Girl series offers a great opportunity to get your students working on creative exercises and writing assignments. Here are a few suggestions for encouraging your students to use their imaginations and learn how to communicate effectively.

Historical Character Profiles
Get students engaged in history by making the past personal -- invite students to imagine a boy or girl living in another time period. Ask students to write a character profile of a boy or girl who lived in a historical period of interest. Students may wish to draw their imagined historical character as well.

Book Reports
Have students prepare a short report on each of the books in the Our Canadian Girl series. Reports can include:
  • A plot summary,
  • A description of the main character,
  • The student's feelings about the book.
You may also try dividing the class into four groups, have each group read a different book and then tell the rest of the class about the Our Canadian Girl story that they read.

Letter Writing
Have your class write a letter to an Our Canadian Girl author or the series editor and send it care of:

Penguin Books Canada
c/o Our Canadian Girl Fan Mail
10 Alcorn Ave., Suite 300
Toronto, ON M4V 3B2

Ask your students to share what they like about Our Canadian Girls and what exciting chapters in Canada's history they would like to read about in future books.
