|   Keeley: The Girl from Turtle Mountain Historical Context: Keeley and her father are new to the town of Frank, Alberta. It is 1901 in what is now known as the Crowsnest Pass region of the Rocky Mountains. Like many Canadians, Keeley and her father move to the coal-mining town to start a new life filled with possibilities. Class Activities: There are hints throughout the story that Keeley O'Brien is interested in being a reporter. At the end of The Girl from Turtle Mountain, Keeley thinks "maybe she should write the story about being trapped inside the mountain. If she left it to grown-ups to write, they'd just call her experience some childish prank, instead of the act of supreme bravery that it was." Have your students write one or two paragraphs describing an adventure that happened to them. Then have them write about the same adventure from the point of view of a news story written by an adult. Discuss how different voices and styles can affect a reader's understanding of the story. Can a newspaper reporter write about her own adventures?
